Although family planning programs have been saved from elimination, the final budget deal greatly affects many other essential health services, particularly for low-income women. Major cuts have been made to community health centers and HIV/AIDS and STI prevention while the Affordable Health Care Act has been eliminated entirely. Most disappointing is the attack on abortion access for Washington DC residents. Despite many politicians standing up against this provision, the District is prohibited from using local funds to help pay for abortions for those who cannot afford it (i.e., low-income folks, most of whom are racial and ethnic minorities). The circus that played out in Congress is ridiculous, as Stephen Colbert so eloquently points out.
